Composting is an easy way for you to help the environment. By composting, you recycle organic materials, save valuable resources, and reduce the burden on our waste disposal system. Composting can also save you money by reducing the weight and volume of your discarded waste possibly reducing garbage bills.
In 2006/2007, a test launch of post-consumer composting began at Tercero Dining Room resulting in a 97% diversion of waste from landfills to either composting or recycling centers. The initiative proved so successful that beginning in the fall of 2007, Castilian, Oxford, and Segundo Dining Rooms will be fully participating in post-consumer composting netting over 100 tons of organic materials that is eventually broken down by Jepson Prairie Organics and used to replenish local farm soils.
Through a strong collaboration with ASUCD Project Compost, nearly 1,000 pounds of pre-consumer compost is collected daily from a variety of dining locations on campus. To learn more about volunteer opportunities with Project Compost, click here.
